Grand bazzar
Grand bazzar is one of the most important tourist landmarks in Istanbul, and the most attractive to tourists. 400,000 tourists visit it on daily basis, and they are served by 26,000 worker of different specializations. It s ‘Kapali carsi Market’ which means in Turkish ‘the celied market’, sometimes it is called ‘Grand Bazzar’. It is one of the oldest and the biggest ceiled market in the world, as it reaches the age of 550 years. Inside it there are 61 streets and 5000 shops, gathering together under the same ceiling in the center of the Turkish capital, and near most of the tourist areas. Several hand-crafts went viral in the ceiled market. The artisans who practiced a certain craft would gather together in one place, which imposed the names of the crafts on the streets that contain it. So, we find names at this time like Nehas (Copper) Street, Dahab (Gold) Street, Nagareen (Carpenters) Street… etc. It developed gradually till the market became a trading center for the Ottoman empire. As Turkish, European and Arab merchants aim at it. It used to be guarded each night by approximately 100 Ottoman soldiers as if it was a stronghold.
