Taksim Square
Taksim Square is named after Sultan Mahmoud I, as it was the gathering point of the main water. That sprout branches afterwards to the rest of the city. You can find there Istanbul’s main metro station, which is considered the living heart of Istabul. It is the center of Istanbul’s culture daily life. It is the artery that connect the borders of the city together.
Istiklal Avenus is the most important street that is connected to the square, making it the most important tourist area in Istanbul, as it is vital and rich with what it offers to the tourist from cafes to restaurants, aside from the shopping and roaming interesting experience. Near Gazi Park that is considered the great green lung in the center of Istanbul the three famous and important hotels around the area. They are not considred among three to five stars hotels, and even the lodging houses there, and around the Square fast food restuarnats.
It is one of the tourist destinations in Istanbul, and it is considered the modern heart of the city. It was reinvented in 1928 AD. As the Italian artist Petro sculptued a statue in 1928 immortalizing the memorium of Ataturk and the victory in the war of independence. The memorial is consisted of a lot of the leading characters during the era of Ataturk which had important roles in the political life.
Since its existence, Taksim Square is considered an important scene of the political demonstrations. Groups of various political orientations, in addition to NGOs, demonstrate for their cases in this square due to its importance and gathering for events such as: New year’s eve, the Republic Day, or the shows on big screens of the important football matches that are not banned. Marches for the protection of nature and humans take place there, as well as celebrations near the Memorial in some occasion, like the celebration of the war of independence, where you can find a military parade in the area.
