Turkish Delight (Rahat Lokum)
Who among us has never tasted a type of the Turkish Delight that Turkey is famous for, and was widely spread in Arab countries? The Turkish Delight with its simple ingredients and many flavours became a heritage appraised by generation after generation. It comes with different names in different countries: Turkish Delight, Rahat Lokum, or Malban; still, the ingredients are the same. It used to be the candy of the kings and Sultans during the Ottoman Empire. It used to be made by honey, molasses, and starch. However, the number of those who loved it increased, and Turks were creative by producing different types of it. The candy nowadays is made of sugar, starch, and the addition of some different flavours. Of course it is covered by sugar or coco-nut. Some of them are stuffed by nuts.
Lots of factories in Turkey produces this candy, which could differ from an area to another. For example, there is a factory that has 150 worker who produce 100,000 tons daily, to be distributed among local markets and exportation. The candy that is offered in different occasions isn’t only limited to local markets, it reached out to modern ones. The prices vary depending on the ingredients added to it. It is the visitor’s and tourist’s companions in Turkey. It is the Turkish Delight that captured the hearts of kings and sultans in ancient times, still capture the hearts generation after generation with its different flavours.
